Microsoft: 8 Trillion Daily Signals Power Our Cybersecurity Services
Microsoft’s security services grew by $10 billion in 2020, as more companies began utilizing their cloud-based security services.
Microsoft released the second quarter of the fiscal year 2021 earnings this week and beat consensus estimates by 7.36%. While most of this growth is attributed to Azure and Xbox, Microsoft’s new blog post shows that security services are becoming a larger part of their revenue stream.
According to Vasu Jakkal, CVP of Security, Compliance and Identity, Microsoft security offerings have generated $10 billion in revenue over the past 12 months and have realized a 40% year-over-year growth.
“Yesterday, Satya shared an important milestone for our security business: $10 billion in revenue in the past 12 months representing more than 40 percent year-over-year growth. A number inclusive of our security, compliance, identity and management businesses, and a testament to the trust our customers have placed in us,” Jakkal stated in a new blog post.

With a massive footprint in the enterprise and consumer market, Microsoft states they can ingest eight trillion security signals every 24 hours. Using machine algorithms and artificial intelligence, these signals are sifted to find new malware campaigns and active threats to their customers.
These security signals include:
- 2.5 billion cloud-based detections
- 30 billion authentications a day
- 30 billion email threats in 2020
- 4 petabytes of data analyzed by Azure Sentinel a month.
Microsoft uses this information as part of their enterprise products, such as Microsoft Defender and Azure Sentinel.

Microsoft also continues to roll out new security features to its users, including yesterdays’ general availability release of Application Guard for Office and increased security features for the redesigned Microsoft Edge Browser.
