Google Outage Affecting YouTube, Gmail And More

Google users are currently experiencing issues around the world, with users unable to access Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Calendar, and other Google services.

When attempting to access YouTube, users are seeing loading screen and error message “There was a problem with the server (503) – Tap to retry”.

Similarly, users are also unable to send or access emails using Gmail for Android and iOS. POP3 access to Gmail and the ability to access the Gmail website is affected, as shown in the screenshot below.

According to DownDetector and user reports, Google services are currently experiencing an outage in the U.S, Europe, and other parts of the world.

It is not known if this is planned maintenance activity, a problem with their servers, or if the networks are under attack.

For now, users of these services will have to wait until Google has resolved the issue.

Update December 14, 7:20 EDT

According to Google’s service status page, the outage is affecting all Google services.

“We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a majority of users. The affected users are unable to access Gmail. We will provide an update by December 14, 2020 4:12:00 AM PST detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.”

Google has stated the outage has been resolved for some users with the following statement on their status pages.

Service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.

Update December 14, 8:59 EDT

Google confirmed that the problem has now been resolved:

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.

Update: December 14, 10:30 EDT

Google says an internal storage quota issue caused the outage:

Today, at 3.47AM PT Google experienced an authentication system outage for approximately 45 minutes due to an internal storage quota issue. This was resolved at 4:32AM PT, and all services are now restored.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
