Microsoft Fixes Windows 10 Internet Connection Issues in New Update

Microsoft Fixes Windows 10 Internet Connection Issues in New Update

Microsoft has released a new optional preview update that fixes two bugs that prevent Windows 10 2003 users from connecting to the Internet.

In July, we reported that Windows 10 users saw ‘No Internet’ message in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI), even though their Internet worked fine.

No Internet

For most users, the above error is more annoying than anything else, but apps that utilize the Windows APIs to detect Internet connection status could run into problems.

When starting these types of programs, users may receive “Please connect your device to the internet” errors, which prevent the app from working.

In addition to the NCSI problem, Windows 10 2004 users with WWAN LTE modems could not connect to the Internet, even if the NCSI status showed that they were connected.

Due to this, Microsoft placed a compatibility hold on Windows 10 2004 upgrades for devices with WWAN LTE modems.

Issues fixed in new Windows 10 2004 update

In the new Windows 10 2004 KB4577063 optional preview update released this week, Microsoft has fixed both issues.

  • Addresses an issue that might prevent applications from opening or cause other errors when applications use Windows APIs to check for internet connectivity and the network icon incorrectly displays “No internet access” in the notification area. This issue occurs if you use a group policy or local network configuration to disable active probing for the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI). This also occurs if active probing fails to use a proxy and passive probes fail to detect internet connectivity.
  • Addresses an issue with certain WWAN LTE modems that might show no internet connection in the notification area after waking from sleep or hibernation. Additionally, these modems might not be able to connect to the internet.

Now that the WWAN LTE modem issue has been fixed, the compatibility hold has been removed, and affected users can not upgrade to Windows 10 2004.

To install the KB4577063 update, you will need to launch Windows Update and then click on ‘View optional updates,’ as shown below.

Once you have installed this update and reboot your computer, you should be able to access the Internet reliably again.

If you choose not to install the optional KB4577063 preview update, these fixes will be rolled into the mandatory cumulative updates released next week as part of the October 2020 Patch Tuesday updates.
