Microsoft Employees Allowed To Work From Home Permanently
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to rage worldwide, Microsoft has reportedly allowed its employees to work from home permanently.
Based on an internal guidance obtained by The Verge, Microsoft employees can choose to work from home for less than 50% of the working week, or get approval from their managers to work from home permanently. If employees choose the latter option, they have to give up their assigned office space. Touchdown spaces will still be available for these employees at Microsoft’s offices.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all of us to think, live, and work in new ways,” says Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft’s chief people officer, in a note to employees. “We will offer as much flexibility as possible to support individual workstyles, while balancing business needs, and ensuring we live our culture.”

Employees can also opt to move across the country to work from home, but compensation and benefits will change and differ according to geopay scale. While home office expenses for permanent remote works will be covered by Microsoft, employees have to pay for their own relocation costs.
Despite the new flexible working plans, Microsoft indicates that there are still several roles that require their employees to be in office. These include employees who need access to hardware labs, data centers and conduct in-person training.
Microsoft is not the only company to allow its employees to work from home permanently. Twitter announced in May that employees would be allowed to work home home permanently even after the coronavirus outbreak is over.
