Windows Emergency Update Fixes Microsoft 365 Issues on Arm Devices

Windows Emergency Update Fixes Microsoft 365 Issues on Arm Devices

Microsoft has released out-of-band (OOB) Windows updates to address a known issue that would cause Azure Active Directory and Microsoft 365 sign-in issues on Arm devices after installing the June 2022 Patch Tuesday updates.

Today’s OOB updates will be automatically installed via Windows Update and can also be downloaded and installed manually via the Microsoft Update Catalog (KB5016139 for Windows 10 and KB5016138 for Windows 11).

“Addresses a known issue that only affects Windows Arm-based devices and might prevent you from signing in using Azure Active Directory (AAD),” Microsoft explains.

“Apps and services that use AAD to sign in, such as VPN connections, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Outlook, might also be affected.”

The complete list of Windows versions affected by this issue includes multiple client platforms: Windows 11 21H2, Windows 10 21H2, Windows 10 21H1, and Windows 10 20H2.

According to a service alert issued to Microsoft 365 customers, some of the impacted scenarios include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

  • Apps and services which use Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to sign in
  • VPN connections
  • Microsoft Teams desktop
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Outlook Desktop client

“This OOB update is cumulative. If you are using updates released before June 14, 2022, we recommend that you install this OOB update instead of the June 14, 2022 security update,” Redmond added.

“If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.”

Workaround also available for affected users

The company also shared a workaround when first acknowledging this known issue on Friday, which those who cannot immediately install today’s emergency update can employ to continue using the affected products.

According to Microsoft, customers who want to use impacted apps should switch to the products’ web versions.

“To mitigate the issue, you can use the web versions of the affected apps, such as OneDriveMicrosoft Teams, and Outlook.com,” Microsoft said.

The June 2022 Windows updates are also plagued by other issues, such as users experiencing connectivity issues when using Wi-Fi hotspots on up-to-date client and server systems, as well as VPN and RDP connection problems on servers with Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) enabled.

This month’s updates may also cause backup issues on Windows Server systems, with apps failing to backup data using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) due to security enforcement that addresses a privilege escalation security vulnerability (CVE-2022-30154).
